THE DELICATE JUDOKA
An illustrated study of balance with the Japanese art form of Judo as its point of departure. The idea created by the artist Spil is to question the traditional good vs. bad conflict and ask whether a 3rd factor such as — balance—provides a solution.
The Judo art forms plays with elements of domination and submission and yet are done so with extreme grace. The camouflage of their jūdōgi (the Judo uniform) twists and turns with fluidity representing the fluid movements of the Judoka (one who practices Judo).
The work presented here examines the two forces and carefully shows their relation to one another. More importantly, the work freezes the movements so that we can see where and how balance could be achieved. The word Judo comes the word softness. This martial art unlike many others comes from the principle of using your opponent’s force and redirecting it towards them. This delicate technique is very powerful without having superior strength in that the smallest bit of momentum from the opponent can easily be used against them.
